Raising Hope is a television comedy program first aired onSeptember 21, 2010 on Fox.[1] The show airs on Tuesdaysat 9:30 pm.[2][3] On January 10, 2011, Foxrenewed Raising Hope for a second season.[4]
Following its first season,the show received two nominations at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards. Martha Plimpton wasnominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in aComedy Series and Cloris Leachman was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in aComedy Series.

A 23-year-old must raisehis infant daughter, conceived from a one-night stand,with the help of his flawed family after the baby's mother (who has killedmultiple boyfriends) is given a death sentence and executed when the baby is only sixmonths old.

§ LucasNeff as James "Jimmy" Chance,Hope's father. He is a 23-year-old who is clueless about raising a child andeverything else. Before having Hope, he met and had a one night stand withLucy, resulting in her pregnancy and the birth of Hope. He did not know aboutHope until eight months later when Lucy contacts him. He also did not know thatLucy was a serial killer until she was put in prison by his family. Jimmy isharmless and kind-hearted. When he was a teenager he went through a phase wherehe dressed like a goth. Jimmy is a fan of The Lord of The Rings and often does animpression of Gollum, which his family finds irritating.

§ GreysonChance as 13-year-old Jimmy.
§ MarthaPlimpton as Virginia Chance.Hope's grandmother, Jimmy's mother, and Burt's wife. Virginia conceived Jimmywhen she was fifteen (he was born on prom night). Her mother left her when shewas two years old with a story about being killed by a duck, and she was raisedby her grandmother, Maw Maw. She wasn't killed by a duck as Virginia thoughtshe was a swinger and didn't want kids.
§ Kelly Heyer as teenage Virginia.
§ GarretDillahunt as Burt Chance. Hope'sgrandfather, Jimmy's father, and Virginia's husband. Burt conceived Jimmy withVirginia when he was seventeen. He has a gardening business, which he runs withJimmy.
§ Cameron Moulene as teenage Burt.
§ ShannonWoodward as Sabrina Collins. Sheworks at the nearby grocery market. She spends most of her time drawing oncantaloupes and mixing up the cereals and soup cans. She immediately catchesJimmy's attention, but has a boyfriend who is studying finance in New York andalso has a rich family.
§ Baylie and Rylie Cregut as Hope Chance (born PrincessBeyonce Carlyle), Jimmy and Lucy's daughter.
§ ClorisLeachman as Barbara June Thompson/Maw Maw (Recurring season 1,starring season 2), Virginia's 85-year-old grandmother, Jimmy'sgreat-grandmother and Hope's great-great-grandmother who tends to show signs of Alzheimer'sDisease. Maw Maw has short-lived moments of lucidity in which shecan be very helpful. For comedic purposes, she will be billed in the maincredits as "And Introducing Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw".

In June 2009, FOX announcedit had booked a put pilot commitment with showcreator Greg Garcia.[5][6] Michael Fresco signed on todirect the pilot in September 2009, which was originally titled Keep Hope Alive.[7]
Casting announcements beganin November, with Martha Plimpton and Lucas Neff as the first actors cast.[8][9] Neff will portray the leadrole of 23-year old Jimmy, the father to infant Hope, with Plimpton playing hismother, Virginia.[8] Olesya Rulin joined the cast shortlythereafter as Sabrina, the new love interest for Jimmy.[8] Garret Dillahunt came on board in lateNovember to portray Jimmy's father, Burt.[10]
In early December 2009, Kate Micucci was added to the cast asJimmy's cousin. The pilot was filmed in December 2009, with Bijou Phillips as Lucy the serialkiller/Hope's mother.[11][12]
In early spring 2010,reports stated that Cloris Leachman would portray Jimmy'sgreat-grandmother, Maw Maw.[13][14] In March, Fox decided torecast two roles from the pilot. Shannon WoodwardreplacedOlesya Rulin as Sabrina, Jimmy's new love interest.[15] Also recast was the role ofJimmy's cousin, and the role reverted back to male with the addition of Skyler Stone as Mike.[12][16] With this, Kate Micucci'srole changed from Jimmy's cousin to become Shelly, the cousin of his loveinterest Sabrina.
Fox green-lit the pilot to series with anorder in mid-May 2010.[17][18] On May 17, 2010, Foxannounced at the upfront presentation that theseries, with the new title Raising Hope, was included in its2010-11 television schedule and set for a fall 2010 premiere.[2][19]
On October 6, Fox ordered 9more episodes of the first season, bringing the first season to 22 episodes.[20] It was the firstfull-season pickup of the 2010-2011 primetime television schedule. On January10, 2011, Fox renewed Raising Hope for a second season.[4]

Raising Hope has received positivereviews from critics. The show's first season received an average score of 75out of 100 on Metacritic, meaningit received "generally favorable reviews."[21] Metacritic also reportsthat 78% of its users gave the show's first season favorable reviews as well.[21]
Tom Gilatto of People Weekly called the show the bestnew sitcom of the season, favorably comparing it to Malcolm in the Middle. Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times was lukewarm towards theshow, stating that "Raising Hope is funny, sweet,occasionally provocative, and occasionally over-the-top in a regrettableway." Other critics were harsher towards the show, such as JamesPoniewozik of Time Magazine, who stated that"Neff is amiably charming, Dillahunt and Plimpton give their characters arealism that belies the pilot's often-contemptuous jokes, and maybe 20% of thefirst episode shows a sweet-heartedness that rises above the easy white-trashhumor." Regardless, reviews of the show were mostly positive by the end ofthe first season. Much of the show's praise went particularly to theperformances of Martha Plimpton and Garret Dillahunt[22]
The second season of Raising Hope premiered on September 20,2011 on Fox, moving to 9:30pm from its original 9:00pm time slot, due to theacquisition of NewGirl. The second season received similar positive reviews tothe first, with Matt Roush of TV Guide calling it "A treatfor anyone who loves a good call-back to classic sitcoms."[23] As of October 2011, theusers of Metacritic have given the show's second season a 8.4 out of 10,indicating universal acclaim.[24]
